Problem Statement

The extensive content library on Netflix can overwhelm users, particularly Gen Z, leading to decision fatigue. Users often spend excessive time scrolling without making a choice, resulting in a negative experience and reduced engagement.

Key issues include:
Reduced viewer engagement
Subscriber retention challenges
Diminished user experience
Missed monetization opportunities

Research and Insights

Interviews: Conducted 20 in-depth interviews with Gen Z Netflix users to gather qualitative insights, collecting data on their browsing habits, frustrations, and desired features.

Behavioral Data Analysis:
We analyzed user behavior data, identifying patterns in content discovery and viewing habits.
Key finding: Users spend an average of 10-15 minutes deciding what to watch, often resulting in decision fatigue.

Insights on Viewing Preferences:
We identified three types of viewers: Binge-watchers, casual watchers, and serious watchers.
Found that most users watch content recommended by friends, featuring their favorite actors/actresses, or directed by favored directors.
Social media influence, especially Instagram reels, significantly impacts viewing choices.
Mood plays a critical role in content selection, with emotional states influencing preferences (e.g., chick flicks during periods, and sad romances after breakups).

Streaming Habits: Regular Netflix user, subscribes to multiple streaming services.
